Heisman or Heisboy?

Let’s play a little game I like to call find what name doesn’t belong in this list: Troy Smith, Adrian Peterson, Brady Quinn, Steve Slaton, Ted Ginn, Chris Leak, Kenny Irons, Garrett Wolfe, John David Booty, and Marshawn Lynch. This is a list of Heisman candidates on a major sports website(cough: Fox sports) and is mirrored on most. First I’d like to go ahead and just throw out the idea that we should wait till week six or so before we start comprising a Heisman list. But back to the game, if you said John David Booty, ding ding that’s right!

I know USC is the media darling, being in L.A. and having pretty boy quarterbacks, I can understand how this can happen. Can we at least see Booty start more than ONE game against a team that went 4-7 last year including wins over Missouri State and Louisiana-Monroe! I think I heard John W. Heisman roll over in his grave when he found out some kid with one start under his belt got put on a list to win HIS trophy. I understand the current trend at USC: recruit star quarterback, win Heisman trophy, win national championship, rinse, wash, and re-Pete as necessary but can we just assume for a second that we don’t have to give at least one Heisman to every guy who takes a snap at USC.

The best weekend of your life

Mark it down on your calendar 9-16-06; this is the kind of day you tell your grandkids about. The college football gods have smiled upon us and given us a day filled with so many great games, that Best Buy stock will probably go up. 7 games of top 25 head to head battles, which will make your mouth water more than a set of baby back ribs. So let’s get to the coverage.

No. 17 Miami at No. 12 Louisville

There are serious implications on the line for this game. Larry Coker is looking at possibility starting the season 1-2, and the fans are already getting restless after Miami 40-3 embarrassment at the hands of LSU at last years Peach Bowl. Louisville is looking to avenge their 2004 loss to Miami in which the Canes’ 20 point 4th quarter comeback left the cardinals helpless. The boys in red are also looking to find the respect they have been looking for by beating a big time program like Miami.

As for as quarterbacks go it’s the Wrong time to be Wright, who has never developed into the highly touted leader at the quarterback position that Miami was looking for. His 132 yard/ 1 int. performance against the Seminoles was less the spectacular and left Canes fans waiting for that big game performance. On the opposite side of the ball is the leader of the high flying Louisville offense; senior Brian Brohm. This is Brohm second full season as the starter after sharing time with fellow standout Stefan LeFors his sophomore season. Brohm is looking good this season, although his opponents have been the proverbial college football doormat Temple and the SEC redheaded stepchild Kentucky. He looks to step up in a big game and bring Louisville to the top.

The big question will be how Louisville can fair with George Stripling and Kolby Smith taking over backfield duties after losing star workhorse Michael Bush. It didn’t seem to be a problem last week as they ran all over temple like it was a pee wee league game, but as mentioned before it was TEMPLE. As usual Miami has a backfield of talented backs, but they were shutout against the stingy Seminole defense in what I deemed not a defensive battle but an offensive struggle.

This should be an offensive slugfest in my opinion with Louisville pulling away in the 3rd quarter and breaking the Miami spirit.
